Let the Games Begin
I love watching the Olympics . I hate watching sports.
Interesting, huh?
It’s the excitement of watching every-day, ordinary people chase, and for some, achieve their dreams.
We all have dreams, right? To be able to get so close after all the hard work in itself is an incredible feeling. As a writer who has written her first manuscript, but hasn’t gotten it to the point of publisher-worthiness, I understand the feeling of being so close you can taste it.
Every four years, I watch the Olympics. I start out on Night 1, the Opening Ceremony.
The genuine thrill of being there comes through the TV. Competitors that have been to the Olympics before and those there for the first time alike have this look of pure joy that is palpable even from my sofa.
In addition to the exuberance of the athletes, I like to see how each country honors the Games.
Each country does something that pays homage to the athletes, the Games and their country equally.
Being a person that has always loved the idea of traveling the world and learning new cultures, it is fun to see the way the hosting country shows the best of what they have to offer.
I’ve always liked the mystique of China. I know there has been a lot of controversy with these games because of Tibet and all; I agree that it is very wrong and things need to change. At the same time, I don’t think the athletes who have worked so hard, some for their whole lives, for this one moment should be cheated. For most, this is their one and only chance. It’s a crime to keep someone from reaching for their dreams.
Tonight, like millions of others, I will sit in front of the TV watching the Opening Ceremony (even though I know it’s not live) and cheer on all the athletes, though I will be giving it a little extra for the U.S.

@foong, your were right, the way the gymnast lit up the torch was awesome!
@jordon, slightly off topic, but I’ll forgive you :)
@Roschelle, I like swimming and gymnastics the best too, but I watch pretty much everything for the Olympics….
@Charmaine, yes I feel I have to give them my support too. So much hard work to get to that one moment. How can you not support them? :)
I am not one for watching Sports either beyond NBA Basketball and that is only during the playoffs.
But I do faithfully watch the Olympics and cheer along from water polo to track and field one of my favorite events. There is something so thrilling about thousands of the world’s best competing in every sport and… hot men with muscles, of course
yes, curlydesign, the hot muscle men do seem to help, don’t they! haha! perhaps that is why I enjoy watching the swimming and diving so much. :P
